Lead your work days safely, document progress, and keep the beneficiary informed.
Checklist
- Announce the project to your troop at least one month ahead.
- Brief all volunteers on safety and assignments at start of each work session.
- Collect Guide to Safe Scouting waivers if required by your council.
- Take progress photos throughout the project.
- Check in with beneficiary after each major milestone.
- Adapt the plan if conditions change - communicate changes in writing.
Tips
- Arrive early to set up and stay late to clean up - that is leadership.
- Have a parent or adult mentor present for tool safety oversight.
- Keep a running log of workers and hours for the final report.
Common mistakes
- Doing the physical work yourself instead of directing others.
- Letting volunteers use power tools without training or supervision.
- Failing to document who showed up and for how long.
